The “Why”

During my trip to Asia, I traveled to Tokyo, Japan, where I stayed for one week. The city was a lively, metropolitan marvel with impressive skylines and neon towers that lit up the night. The friendly people and the constant aroma of delicious food from the numerous restaurants at every corner made my stay unforgettable. This vibrant energy and warmth were in stark contrast to my younger experiences in China, where I had focused mainly on cuisine, sights, and entertainment without much awareness of the social and cultural differences. However, on this trip, I had a greater appreciation for the differences in our societies and livelihoods. Visiting four cities in China, I was amazed by the security, the sights, and the welcoming community of the people. It felt like I was Alice falling into Wonderland, stepping into a world where safety was not a constant concern, interactions with friendly strangers were commonplace, the streets were clean, and daily life was remarkably convenient.

The core of From Here to There is simple: genuine connection. I created it with the desire to strengthen relationships between cultures, not through politics or stereotypes, but through the videos and personal experiences of others. It’s a space where you can step into another world, cross a bridge, and see how other people live without actually traveling or going anywhere. You can cross the bridge and see how people live, what they eat, what they see, how they feel, where they travel, and how they celebrate, what they create. I focus mainly on Gen Z, my generation, because we are the youth of the world, growing up in societies shaped by the older generations and their beliefs, stereotypes, and depictions. By sharing stories from countries such as China, I want people to see beyond the dark covers of stereotypes and hate, and instead see the humanity, humor, and creativity that extend beyond those borders. This project is my way of pushing back against the double standards I’ve grown up with– with how some cultures are over-romanticized while others are demonized or ignored and misrepresented. I want my website to be a bridge, a clean passage for people who are curious and have never had the chance to explore beyond their own bubble. It’s not perfect and still needs work, but every post is a step towards understanding, empathy, and more freedom to be proud of where you came from.
